Raw cacao is the highly prized and sacred seed of a tree indigenous to Central and South America. The Maya believed the kakaw (cacao) was discovered by the gods in a mountain that contained other delectable and medicinal food to be used by them and it was treated accordingly. It has been used in shamanic rituals, worshipped and offered as sacrifice for centuries by the Mayans. They called cacao ‘the water that runs through the heart. It is a heart helper on so many different levels- physically, emotionally and spiritually.
It is a ‘superfood’ rich in magnesium, iron, zinc, calcium, chromium, manganese, sulphur, copper and phosphorous. It is rich in polyphenols, a group of protective antioxidant compounds, in cacao they are protective in two ways- helping to prevent so called ‘bad cholesterol’ and hardening of the arteries. Cacao is the highest source in the natural world. Cacao also works with our mood enhancing the production of various feel good chemicals in the brain, in particular serotonin (the happy chemical), anandamide (the bliss chemical) and PEA- this chemical occurring in cacao in small quantities stimulates the nervous system and triggers the release of dopamine. This also increases in the brain when we fall in love and during orgasm, which adds another layer to cacao consumption- we are literally falling in love and sinking into bliss on a bio chemical level. Add energy enhancing, regenerative adapatogen, pineal gland activator to the mix and they haven’t even fully researched the 300 compounds it contains and you have one powerful little bean.
And the spiritual, an Indigenous Mayan myth tell us that whenever the balance between humans and nature becomes threatened, cacao comes out from the rainforest to opens people’s hearts and return the planet back to a state of harmony. When accompanied with ceremony we are invoking a deeper connection to each other and our home. Unlike some of the other plant medicines from these regions used in ceremony, you do not need to lose touch with this dimension or each other. Chocolate is a socially accepted drug, no need to persuade your mum or grandma of the benefits, you’ll have more trouble encouraging them to eat the bitter raw form. Cacao keeps you grounded and helps with meditation as it calms the left brain chatter. It opens our heart and takes us on a powerful journey with our higher selves.
Don’t under estimate this little bean!
