Christmas and a time to question where our stuff comes from?

Dear Fellow Beings of Light
For many of us we have lost the true meaning of Christmas. It has become more about consumption and material possessions rather than the true spirit of fellowship, love, celebration and gratitude.
As we head towards 2010 we all need to make some personal choices on how we live our lives during the coming year and Christmas is a great time for reminding us what really matters and how all our actions create a cause and effect that can be either positive or negative.
For the last year we have been bombarded with negative news and images. We have had to contend with bird flu, global warming, Afghanistan, rising petrol, food and living prices, in an endless supply of bad news. The question we need to ask ourselves is ‘Are we helpless victims or can we make a difference?’
Sometimes the problems in the world seem insurmountable and so we do nothing in the hope that others in power will do what is needed to help save the resources on our planet for further generations.
But since Copenhagen Summit it has become clearer and clearer that we cannot wait for governments to make the changes. We must and Christmas is the perfect time to set intention for the coming year.
There is a way out of this mad cycle of consumption and destruction and that is conscious purchasing. We the consumer hold the power in the way we spend our money. We can choose how we want our planet to be by how we choose to what we buy.
There has always been commerce and trading, and we will always have to buy the things we need it’s just how we make our stuff and what damage we are doing to the planet, local communities and local resources in the process. Watch the excellent Story of Stuff for more info on this
When we choose to buy sustainable, fair-trade, local goods from small businesses we are supporting the real economy, and not the bogus economy created for share holders. This means the money stays in the local community and brings jobs and prosperity to many more people.
So if you want to make a difference this coming year, think carefully before making your next purchase and make a decision to support local businesses - the power is in your hands…
Love and Blessings
